Late Pope Shenouda III

Early Ministry & Priesthood
Always knowing his calling to ministry, he entered the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, known as Deir El-Sourian, in the ancient western desert region of Wadi Natrun, in 1954 and was tonsured monk on July 18, 1954, named Fr. Antonios El-Souriany. He was ordained a priest-monk on August 31, 1958. From 1956-1962, he lived as a solitary hermit in a cave he carved about 7 miles from the monastery, dedicating himself to total prayer and contemplation.
Time as Bishop
He was consecrated Bishop Shenouda, Bishop of Christian Education and Dean of the Coptic Orthodox Theological Seminary on September 30, 1962. Under his patronage of the Seminary, women were invited to enroll as students. As a result of his reputation as a scholar and teacher, the number of students tripled. From 1962-2012, he was the founder and Editor-in-Chief of El Kiraza Magazine, the official journal of the Coptic Orthodox Church.

Enthronement

Global Growth
As a result of immigration, the number of Coptic Egyptians who moved from their homeland to America, Canada, Europe and Australia grew in the 1970s, and, by the time of his enthronement in 1971, there were already four churches in North America. His departure in 2012 saw 214 churches in the United States, 38 churches in Canada and one church in Mexico.
Additionally, the number of churches throughout Europe, Australia and South America multiplied, giving birth to the establishment of dioceses throughout the world to administer the work of these communities.
His Travels
From April 14-May 23, 1977, H.H. the late Pope Shenouda became the first Pope of Alexandria to visit North America when he visited the USA and Canada. On this first official visit, He met both President Carter in the Oval Office and the United Nations Secretary General in New York.
His Second Official Visit was in 1989, when he visited each Coptic Church in North America. He also returned to the Oval Office to visit President George H.W. Bush and opened a session of Congress with prayer.
Traveling the world to shepherd his flock, H.H. Pope Shenouda journeyed to several countries, including visiting Australia six times. He conducted an extended Silver Jubilee tour from May 18-December 20, 1996, which took him to Europe, Canada, USA and Australia. His Holiness authored 101 books on a variety of subjects, over half of which have been translated into English, French, German, Greek, Armenian, Italian, and other languages

Defender of His People
Due to a rise in sectarian strife and discrimination, after which followed a string of attacks on churches in Egypt in the late 1970’s, His Holiness was courageous in defending the rights of his people. This and other circumstances led Anwar Sadat, president of Egypt at the time, to invalidly revoke government recognition of the Pope and he was exiled and placed under house arrest at the Monastery of St Bishoy from September 1981 until January 1985.
